We are looking to recruit a Volunteer Trainee Counsellor to provide a confidential and professional counselling service to pupils, working alongside our school counselling team.

Tring Park School for the Performing Arts is one of the UK’s leading vocational and academic schools in glorious countryside just half an hour from London. Working with 360 boarding and day pupils, aged 7 to 19, you will join a school’s dedicated and supportive staff team that offers the advantage of small classes with talented and committed students and strong public examination results.

About the role

*The placement will be 2-4 hours per week on either of the following: Monday 8:30am-7pm, Tuesday 8:30am-6:30pm or Wednesday 8:30am-7pm, plus in-school monthly group supervision (term time only).

Main Duties

  • To offer confidential and professional one to one counselling to pupils.
  • To work with a diverse range of issues potentially including bereavement and loss, anxiety and fear, family and friendship issues, depression, transition, eating disorders, self-harm, depression, anger management, erratic behaviour, as well as other issues.
  • To keep suitable case records on the one to one counselling provided at school in a secure place, in accordance with the GDPR/school requirements.
  • To liaise with the Lead Counsellor on a frequent basis to ensure the appropriate care of pupils.
  • To attend monthly group supervision within the school (currently once a month on a Mon 2.30pm-4.30pm).
  • To liaise with the relevant school staff such as the school nurses, and DSP staff regarding any safeguarding issues.
  • To attend monthly 1:1 clinical supervision with a suitably qualified supervisor, as appropriate to adhere to BACP (or equivalent) Ethical guidelines.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience of working effectively as a Trainee Counsellor with a minimum of approximately 20 hours one-to-one counselling experience. (We also welcome applications from trainees who might have other relevant experience if they might not have had the 20 hours one-to-one counselling experience).
  • Valid student membership of the BACP or equivalent, and valid student counsellor liability insurance (both must be valid throughout the placement).
  • Willingness to adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework (or equivalent).
  • Attending a minimum of 1 hour monthly 1:1 clinical supervision.
  • To be currently enrolled as a student on a recognised Counselling Course.

Desirable

  • Experience working effectively as a counsellor with young people in schools.
  • Experience in liaising effectively with school staff, parents and external agencies.
  • Experience with peer/group supervision.
  • Willingness to contribute to ideas and feedback as part of the counselling team and school life beyond the counselling room.
